ABOUT US (Deutsch translation)
The Melanie Thornton Youth Arts Foundation, Inc. was named to honor the memory of a famous performing artist who died tragically at the age of thirty four (34) while on tour.
Melanie was the original lead singer of the Euro dance duo LaBouche, who’s hit songs “Sweet Dreams” and “Be My Lover” became popular world wide in 1995 and 1996. After selling over ten million (10,000,000) CDs and earning gold and platinum sales awards in 25 countries, Melanie decided to embark on a solo career. It was while promoting her first solo CD that Melanie perished in a plane crash while on route to Switzerland.
A thoughtful, kind and giving person, Melanie had no children, though she loved them dearly. Melanie gave very generously to children’s charities and took pride in always striving to improve her knowledge, skills and abilities as a professional performing artist. The Melanie Thornton Youth Arts Foundation, Inc. which was founded by her surviving sister and Executive Director, began by awarding twenty two (22) scholarships to at risk youths to attend a dance school in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The very first scholarships were awarded during the 2007/2008 school year.
With the success of the program companies and individuals began offering donations to assist the program in its growth and development. Board members were selected and the process of formalizing the foundation began. During the first few board meetings research from sources including the Children’s Defense Fund, the 2000 Census and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was presented. Along with the articles of organization and the bylaws, board members decided to expand the foundation’s services beyond awarding scholarships.
